Garage Door Opener Buying Guide — Liftmaster, Genie, Smart MyQ

Belt vs. screw vs. jackshaft. Battery backup or not. Smart app or basic remote. Here's what to buy and what to skip.

Liftmaster opener installed on residential ceiling

There are two opener brands worth installing — Liftmaster and Genie. There are three drive types — belt, chain, and jackshaft. There are several smart-control variants. Here's the framework we use to choose.

Belt vs. chain vs. jackshaft: which opener drive is best?

**Belt drive is the right choice for roughly 90% of attached residential garages** — it's the quietest ceiling-mounted option, uses a rubber-reinforced belt that needs no lubrication, and lasts 12–18 years. Choose chain for detached garages where noise doesn't matter, or jackshaft (wall-mount) for cathedral ceilings or any home where you want the ceiling free.

  • Belt drive — quietest of the ceiling-mounted options. Rubber-reinforced belt. 90% of new installs.
  • Chain drive — loudest, longest-lasting, lowest cost-of-ownership. For unattached or detached garages where noise doesn't matter.
  • Jackshaft (wall-mount) — quietest overall, mounts on the wall next to the spring shaft, frees the ceiling, perfect for cathedral ceilings.
  • Screw drive — older technology, used in some commercial. Skip for residential.

How much horsepower does a garage door opener need?

**Most residential garage doors need ¾ HP equivalent.** Heavier carriage doors, real wood doors, or any door taller than 8 feet benefit from a 1¼ HP motor. Don't underspec — an underpowered opener wears out fast, burns through gears, and can leave you with a door that won't lift on a cold morning.

Do I need a garage door opener battery backup?

**California building code requires battery backup on every new opener install; the rest of the country doesn't, but it's strongly recommended.** It's an inexpensive add-on that pays for itself the first time the power goes out and you need to leave or get home. For attached garages, it's also a safety item — you can't manually lift a 200-lb insulated door alone.

Smart and connected

MyQ (Liftmaster / Chamberlain) is the de-facto standard. Get an app notification when the door opens or closes, integrate with Alexa/Google/Apple Home, schedule auto-close. Add a Liftmaster smart camera and you have a poor-man's security camera with a clear view of your driveway.

Two real-world recommendations

  1. Forged Pro tier — Liftmaster 8500W wall-mount jackshaft + battery backup. Quietest, frees the ceiling, lasts 15+ years. The right answer for most homes.
  2. Forged Smart tier — Liftmaster 8160W belt + smart camera + battery + bundled MyQ. The right answer if you want the door to also be a security feature.

06FAQ

What people ask us.

Often yes — if the opener is under 10 years old and you bought it from Liftmaster, Genie, Chamberlain, or LiftPower. We'll re-pair it to the new door at no charge. We'll tell you honestly when it's better to replace.

Quality openers last 12–18 years if maintained. The motor outlives the gears. Plan to replace logic boards or gear assemblies once over the opener's lifetime — typically a single repair visit on a 10–12-year-old unit.
