New doors

What does a new garage door cost?

Quick answer

The most cited benchmark is the 2025 Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report, which put the national average job cost of a garage door replacement at $4,672. That figure covers one specific job: a 16 by 7 foot, four-section insulated steel door on new tracks, reusing the existing opener. Your door may differ from that spec, so treat it as a yardstick and get a measured quote.

What the $4,672 figure actually covers

The report prices a defined project, not a range of doors. Its definition, as reprinted by DASMA, the door industry's trade association:

  • Remove and dispose of the existing 16 by 7 foot door and its tracks.
  • Install a new four-section door on new heavy-duty galvanized steel tracks.
  • High-tensile-strength steel with two coats of factory paint, foam insulated to at least R-12, with thermal seals between pinch-resistant panels.
  • Top-panel windows of 1/2-inch insulated glass.
  • Galvanized steel hinges and ball-bearing urethane rollers.
  • A lifetime warranty on the door.
  • The existing motorized opener is reused.

So a new opener is not in that number. Neither is a wider door, a wood or carriage-style door, or more glass.

How the price has moved

The same report series put the average job cost at $4,302 in 2023, $4,513 in 2024 and $4,672 in 2025. Of the 28 projects in the 2025 report, it was one of the least expensive, second only to a steel entry door replacement.

What it does at resale, including our region

Nationally, the 2025 report estimated that the $4,672 job added $12,507 to resale value, a 268% return. It was the top project for return in all nine regions the report covers, and the return passed 200% in seven of them, the South Atlantic among them. In Census Bureau terms, Georgia sits in the South Atlantic division.

We could not open the report's own Atlanta or South Atlantic dollar figures to check them, so we are not quoting them here. These are averages from a cost survey, not an appraisal of your house.

The parts of the spec that change your price

Read the definition above as a list of line items. Each one can move up or down on your job:

  • Size and section count. The benchmark is a single 16 by 7 foot door.
  • Insulation. The benchmark is foam insulated to at least R-12. Our guide on insulated doors in Georgia heat covers what that number does and does not measure.
  • Glass. Insulated glass in the top panel only.
  • Hardware. Galvanized hinges and ball-bearing rollers.
  • Opener. Reused in the benchmark. A new one is extra.
  • Tracks. New in the benchmark, and they should be. Clopay's installation instructions say never to reuse old track or hardware on a new door, because it can cause installation problems or let the door fall.

Our buying guide walks through those choices in more depth.

Common questions

Does the $4,672 average include a new garage door opener?

No. The Cost vs. Value project reuses the existing motorized opener, so a new opener would be on top of that figure.

Is replacing a garage door good for resale?

By the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, yes. It estimated a 268% average return nationally and ranked garage door replacement first for return in all nine regions it studied.

Can the installer reuse my old tracks to save money?

They should not. Clopay's installation instructions say never to reuse old track or hardware on a new door, because it can cause problems or let the door fall.
