Brookhaven became a city on December 17, 2012, after a referendum that July, and counted 56,795 people in the 2020 census. The area is much older than the city. Historic Brookhaven, the neighborhood around the Capital City Country Club, was laid out starting in 1910 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Most of that neighborhood sits inside the City of Atlanta, so check which city your address is in.

Most of the rest of Brookhaven came later. Major commercial and residential development ran from the 1950s through the 1970s, and the area was largely built out by 1980. That means many garages in neighborhoods like North Brookhaven are several decades old. If yours still has its original door, look at the panels first.
